Matthew Inman, owner of The Oatmeal blog and self-proclaimed Nikola Tesla fanatic, has restarted his campaign to fund a museum dedicated to the electricity pioneer. And he's counting on Elon Musk to help raise the money.

Initially launched on Indiegogo in 2012, the campaign raised $1.37 million—enough to save the existing laboratory property from becoming a shopping center, but not enough to actually construct the museum.

"To finish what we started and build an actual Nikola Tesla Science Center, we need something closer to the tune of $8 million," Inman said in a blog post. "And crowdfunding it won't work a second time. We've already played that card."

So, the artist appealed to the one businessman closest to the Tesla name—Elon Musk, CEO and chief product architect of Tesla Motors.

Perhaps hoping to butter up the entrepreneur first, Inman penned a glowing cartoon review of the Tesla Model S—or the intergalactic SpaceBoat of Light and Wonder, as Inman likes to call it.

Then he took a leap, appealing to Musk directly and asking for his help.

"You owe us nothing, and you've done nothing but good things in the name of Nikola Tesla," Inman wrote. "But the fact remains: Tesla Motors, a company now worth billions, is using Nikola Tesla's name and they're using his technology, and all we want in return is a little bit of help."

Early this week, Inman tweeted his review and request to Musk. "I'm asking you to donate again, but this time donate the full $8 million," the artist wrote. On Wednesday, Musk replied, saying he "would be happy to help."

It wouldn't be the first time Musk lent some of his fortune to Inman's cause: During the initial fundraiser, Musk donated $2,500.

A Tesla spokeswoman declined to comment to PCMag, but Re/code reported that Musk will donate to the museum, though it's not certain he will foot the entire $8 million bill.

Meanwhile, Musk is also eyeing a $5 billion electric car battery "gigafactory," which will help reduce the cost of lithium-ion cells, and therefore decrease the price of Tesla vehicles.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the company intends to break ground on a potential factory site next month. It remains unclear which location Musk will choose, though Tesla is said to be considering areas of Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, and possibly California.
