Topping tech headlines over the weekend, Google debuted its first official Glass retail display at the Players Championship PGA event at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Verde Beach, Fla.
Promising a buy-one-get-a-mini-camera-golf-club-accessory-free promotion, the company reported "much better than expected" sales of its $1,500 device. The weekend-long display—a lit-up sign and a table-top with a few unpacked models—is part of Google's move to market its futuristic headset to sports lovers, as well as optometrists, online retailers, cooks, and travelers, according to a recent Google+ post.
In other news, Apple's next-generation iPhone could launch in August —one month earlier than expected. According to recent reports, the tech giant is gearing up to unveil the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 in only three months; a rumored 5.5-inch or 5.6-inch model may go on sale in September. Don't believe everything you read, though—August may just be a target date, not a firm launch.
Meanwhile, Apple has hired former Nokia camera engineering executive Ari Partinen, the man who played a key role in the development of cameras like the industry-leading Nokia 808 PureView. Partinen spent seven years working his way to the top of Nokia, ending on a high note with 2012's PureView 808—one of the top smartphone camera technologies on the market.
