HTC today unveiled a revamped version of its One smartphone that the company said will provide users with an "unprecedented" experience.

The new HTC One boasts a 4.7-inch full HD 1080p display with 468 ppi. It runs a 1.7-GHz, quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor and HTC Sense, a customized version of Android.

The phone supports NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, and DLNA for wireless streaming to a TV or computer. It can also work as a remote control on supported devices. There's a microUSB 2.0 port with a mobile high-def video link for USB or HDMI hookup.

HTC talked up the new UltraPixel camera with HTC Zoe - a new feature that lets users shoot high-res photos that "come to life" in three-second snippets. HTC said Zoe will turn regular camera rolls into a "motion gallery of memories." Zoe can also create highlight reels from a given event, complete with music, transitions, and effects.

The camera itself includes an f/2.0 aperture lens and UltraPixel sensor that gathers 300 percent more light than traditional smartphone camera sensors, HTC said. An ultra-wide, front-facing camera also supports 1080p video capture, while both cameras include image stabilization. There's also enhanced 360-degree panorama, time sequencing, and object removal features.

HTC also talked up two new features: BlinkFeed and BoomSound. BlinkFeed turns your home screen into a "live stream" of content, which will be pulled from 1,400 HTC media partners, like AOL, ESPN, and MTV. The idea, HTC said, is to aggregate the "freshest content from the most relevant and interesting sources, giving it to people at a glance, all in one place, without the need to jump between multiple applications and websites."

BoomSound, meanwhile, adds front-facing stereo speakers to the new HTC One, as well as built-in Beats Audio.

HTC said the new One will be available globally from 185 carriers in more than 80 regions and countries starting in March, including AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile in the U.S. Pricing was not released, but the phone will come in silver and black.

My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
