Nokia on Friday officially unveiled its next Windows Phone, the Lumia 928, which will be exclusive to Verizon Wireless in the U.S.

The Lumia 928 will debut on May 16 for $99 after a $50 mail-in rebate with a two-year service contract. For a limited time, buyers will also get a $25 credit for the Windows Phone app store.

The Windows Phone 8-based smartphone includes a 4.5-inch OLED, 1,280-by-768 display with 334 ppi. Nokia said the "super-sensitive" touch screen, made from Gorilla Glass 2, will respond to those wearing gloves or with long fingernails.

The Lumia 928 runs a 1.5-GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor. There's 1GB of RAM and 32GB of internal memory, and users will get another 7GB of SkyDrive storage from Microsoft.

While Nokia only just revealed the Lumia 928 today, it has been teasing the smartphone for days now, with a particular emphasis on the device's camera. The 8.7-megapixel rear-facing camera incorporates Nokia's PureView technology, Carl Zeiss optics, optical image stabilization, Xenon flash for still images, and HD 1080p video capture at 30 fps. There's also a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera with 720p HD video capture.

The Lumia 928 also includes "distortion-free audio capture," even when it's noisy.

"Whether you're attending a party, a concert or a sporting event with friends, the Nokia Lumia 928 excels at capturing high-quality video, audio and blur-free photos of life's most share-worthy moments," Matt Rothschild, vice president of Nokia North America, said in a statement. "Verizon Wireless customers, we heard you and the wait is over - we're excited to offer a Nokia flagship smartphone, specially designed and optimized for the nation's largest 4G LTE network."

The phone, available in black or white, will come with Nokia apps, including the company's Here mapping services and Nokia Music, as well as Smart Shoot, Cinemagraph, Panorama, and Photobeamer for the camera.

My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
