NetherRealm Studios' DC Comics-based fighter Injustice: Gods Among Us ranked as the top-selling game for a second consecutive month in May, as the gaming industry faced steep declines in retail sales, according to new data from the NPD Group.

Sales of new gaming hardware, software, and accessories topped $386.3 million last month, down from $517 million a year earlier. But sales of new, physical gaming merchandise typically only account for half of consumer spending on games each month, according to NPD Group's Liam Callahan. The firm estimates that used and rental sales brought in $91 million while digital format sales totaled $339 million, bringing total U.S. video game sales to around $787 million in May.

Hardware sales took a major hit during the month, dropping 31 percent to 96 million from 139 million a year ago. The Nintendo 3DS had the best year-over-year performance across all hardware models, with unit sales essentially remaining flat from last May.

"Nintendo's 3DS edged out the 360 as the top selling platform across hardware and portables," Callahan said. "However, the 360 was the top selling console hardware platform this month for the twenty-ninth consecutive month."

Meanwhile, sales of new software also dropped 31 percent to $175.1 million, down from $255.4 million last year. The drop largely stemmed from a decline in the number of new launches, as well as poor performance of the titles that were released.

"Overall new launch performance in May '13 was poor, down 84 percent in units, decreasing 88 percent in dollars, which was driven by PCs and Consoles as new launches for portables were up 5 percent in units, and down only 7 percent in dollars," Callahan said.

Accessory sales fared a little better, totaling $115.3 million last month, down 6 percent from a year earlier. In fact, this was the best May for point and subscription card sales on record.

Now, without further ado, the top 10 games of May were:

1. Injustice: Gods Among Us

2. Call of Duty: Black Ops II

3. Donkey Kong Country Returns

4. Dead Island: Riptide

5. Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon

6. Metro: Last Light

7. NBA 2K13

8. Bioshock Infinite

9. Battlefield 3

10. Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes

My Experience

I'm PCMag's managing editor for consumer electronics, overseeing an experienced team of analysts covering smart home, home entertainment, wearables, fitness and health tech, and various other product categories. I have been with PCMag for more than 10 years, and in that time have written more than 6,000 articles and reviews for the site. I previously served as an analyst focused on smart home and wearable devices, and before that I was a reporter covering consumer tech news. I'm also a yoga instructor, and have been actively teaching group and private classes for nearly a decade.

Prior to joining PCMag, I was a reporter for SC Magazine, focusing on hackers and computer security. I earned a BS in journalism from West Virginia University, and started my career writing for newspapers in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

The Technology I Use

My little Florida beach bungalow is brimming with smart home tech. I have a smart speaker or display in every room, allowing me to control other connected devices by voice. The Nest Hub on my bedside table lets me set wake-up alarms, control my smart light bulbs, and set the temperature on my smart thermostat. I use the Amazon Echo Show 8 on my kitchen counter to browse recipes, reorder protein powder, check the weather, and watch the news while I do dishes.

Because I suffer from allergies, air purifiers are essential. My favorite model is the Dyson Purifier Cool TP07, which doubles as a fan and continuously sends indoor pollution data to its companion mobile app.

My pitbull Bradley sheds, so a good robot vacuum is a must. I currently use a premium Ecovacs Deebot that can both vacuum and mop, empty its own dustbin, and wash its own mop cloth.

For fitness, I like to mix up my routine with cycling, indoor rowing, running, and strength training in addition to yoga. I take classes on the Tonal 2 smart strength training machine, I row indoors on an Aviron machine, and track my beach runs with an Apple Watch while listening to music on my Apple AirPods Pro. On the weekends, I love riding e-bikes like the rugged, beach-friendly Aventon Aventure for fun and fitness.

My job involves a lot of virtual meetings, so a quality webcam, microphone, and ring light are important. I use the Jabra PanaCast 20 webcam, the Elgato Wave: 3 microphone, and a Yesker tripod ring light.

As for my preferred phone platform, I'm an iPhone person, but I've also extensively used Android for product testing.
