Apple on Sunday confirmed that Bob Mansfield, who has served as senior vice president of technologies, has been dropped from its executive team.

Mansfield, known for his work on the MacBook Air and other devices, will now work on special projects, Reuters reported.

The news emerged over the weekend when Mansfield's bio disappeared from the Apple website. Apple later confirmed to AllThingsD that "Bob is no longer going to be on Apple's executive team, but will remain at Apple working on special projects reporting to [CEO] Tim [Cook]."

The announcement comes almost a year after the former exec reversed his decision to retire from the company.

In June 2012, Mansfield decided to leave the tech game, but two months later, it was announced that Mansfield would remain at Apple, to "work on future products" and report directly to CEO Tim Cook.

Mansfield joined Apple in 1999 after Cupertino acquired Raycer Graphics, where he served as vice president of engineering. During his tenure, Mansfield was in charge of the Mac hardware team since 2005, iPhone and iPad hardware engineering since 2010, and the iPad hardware team since its start.

Apple did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment.

When an October executive shake-up saw the exit of iOS chief Scott Forstall, Mansfield took on some of his duties, including leading a new group at Apple known as Technologies, which combined all of the company's wireless teams into one team.
