Google's latest mobile operating system, dubbed Ice Cream Sandwich, is now on 0.6 percent of Android devices, according to stats released yesterday.

About 0.3 percent of devices are running Android 4.0-4.0.2, while the other 0.3 percent are on Android 4.0.3, Google said on its developer Web site.

At this point, however, the most popular version of Android is Gingerbread, or version 2.3. About 55 percent of devices currently run that version of Android, followed by its predecessor, Froyo, with 30.4 percent.

In early December, 50.6 percent were running Gingerbread while Froyo was on 35.3 percent of phones.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was first announced at a joint Google-Samsung event in Hong Kong in late October, and Google released the OS's source code about a month later. The first device with ICS, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, made its debut overseas on Nov. 17, with the U.S. version on Verizon Wireless following suit on Dec. 15.

Android Ice Cream Sandwich Now on 0.6 Percent of Devices

Ice Cream Sandwich pulls in elements from Gingerbread and the tablet-centric Honeycomb OS, or Android 3.0. At this point, Honeycomb is still on a limited number of devices—3.3 percent across all versions.

There are still a few people on the earliest versions of Android, meanwhile. About 0.6 percent are on Android 1.5 Cupcake, 1.1 percent are on Android 1.6 Donut, and 8.5 percent are on Eclair, or Android 2.1.

Recently, Google's Android chief, Andy Rubin, said there are more than 700,000 Android device activations each day.

My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
