Will Barnes & Noble beat Amazon to market with a new color device? According to a report from The Digital Reader, the retailer will release an updated Nook on November 7.

Citing sources within Barnes & Noble, the blog said the company is planning a big launch on that date, though he had few details about what the new product might entail. One individual, who works in a Barnes & Noble store, told The Digital Reader that they have replaced a customer service counter with a huge Nook boutique.

"Our manager told us, this space was not designed to house just 2 nooks. He was being candid, he said, November 7th there will be a major announcement from the company. he concluded saying it was exciting times. Obviously something is coming," the source said. Another employee told the blog the same thing.

Barnes & Noble did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Last month, The Digital Reader said that B&N was prepping a $349 tablet, which would possibly be known as the Acclaim. The Nook Smart Touch e-reader would still be offered at $139 while the Nook Color would remain at $249. Specs were not provided.

That report came one day after Amazon sent out invites for a September 28 event, where Jeff Bezos eventually unveiled the Amazon Kindle Fire tablet, as well as a touch-based Kindle e-reader and $79 non-touch version. The Kindle Fire will not be released until November 15, but Amazon is already taking pre-orders. During its recent earnings call, the company said it will be ramping up production on the Kindle Fire because of strong initial demand.

My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
