Verizon Wireless customers can start pre-ordering the Motorola Droid RAZR starting Thursday at 8am Eastern.

The device costs $299.99 with a two-year contract, and will be available via Verizon's Web site or in stores. Verizon did not provide an exact release date, but said the RAZR will ship no later than November 10.

Motorola unveiled the Droid RAZR last week; it's Verizon's second dual-core 4G LTE smartphone and will be its fastest and thinnest device yet. The 0.28-inch-thin Droid RAZR packs a dual-core 1.2-GHz processor, 4.3-inch Super AMOLED advanced qHD display, 8-megapixel rear camera with 1080p video recording, HD front-facing camera, and mobile hotspot support for up to eight Wi-Fi devices.

The RAZR will launch with Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, though Verizon will reportedly upgrade the device to Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, in early 2012.

Verizon said NFL Mobile will be free for 4G LTE customers for the remainder of the 2011 season.

After getting some time with the RAZR, PCMag mobile analyst Sascha Segan said it "is one of those phones that feels even better in the hand than it does in pictures." The screen is huge, but "it's still very handle-able, just because it's so darn thin," he said. For more, see his full hands on and the slideshow below.

There are also some accessory options for the RAZR, including an improved 14-inch laptop dock. The Droid RAZR is a Webtop phone, meaning it turns into a desktop or laptop computer running Firefox when it's hooked up to the appropriate dock. UPDATE: Best Buy said Thursday that it will also be accepting pre-orders for lthe Droid RAZR.

My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
