Apple's iOS 5 made its debut this afternoon, and fans quickly jumped at the chance to upgrade their OS. All that activity, however, apparently hosed Apple's systems, with many users reporting long wait times, cancelled updates, and more.

In Apple's forums, those who jumped on the download quick—within minutes of the 1pm Eastern release time—had few problems ("I downloaded and installed in about 12 minutes," wrote one). But as more and more people got wind of its availability and tried to download, the wait times ballooned.

"My current download is as follows: 10.8MB of 778.4MB, 39 Hours remaining. Think yourselves lucky!" wrote one person. Others reported timing out after getting 600MB or 400MB into the process. "Never had this before with any of the apple updates, also tried using icloud all seems to go well, then had 'error in moving mail,' try later," said one user.

Some received Error Code 3200 when updating from iOS 4.3.5 to iOS 5. "Just keep trying. On my 8th attempt it worked!!" one person said.

Here at PCMag, junior analyst Jill Duffy was able to access iOS 5 minutes after it emerged, but software analyst Michael Muchmore had a bit more trouble later in the afternoon; though the download appeared to be complete, it was not, forcing him to quit.

Our colleagues in the tech space faced similar challenges. SearchEngineLand's Danny Sullivan was met with "An error occurred when restoring this iPhone."

"Common iOS upgrade errors we're hearing: download installation errors, probably apple server issues. Deleted apps, music, photos, folders," Cult of Mac also tweeted.

How did you do? Were you able to upgrade? Let us know in the comments.

My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
