Google and Samsung have postponed an October 11 event that was expected to include the launch of Android "Ice Cream Sandwich" and the Samsung Nexus Prime smartphone out of respect for Steve Jobs.

"Samsung and Google have decided to postpone the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event during the CTIA in San Diego, previously scheduled for Oct. 11," Samsung said in an initial blog post. "Under the current circumstances, both parties have agreed that this is not the appropriate time for the announcement of a new product. We ask for your understanding regarding any inconvenience caused. We will announce a new date and venue in due course."

In a later statement, Google said "we believe this is not the right time to announce a new product as the world expresses tribute to Steve Jobs's passing."

A Samsung spokesperson said rumors of an October 27 event in London, meanwhile, are "not true whatsoever."

Last week, Google and Samsung invited the press to an event in San Diego that would provide "a look at what's new from Android." The event, dubbed Samsung Mobile Unpacked 2011, would coincide with the CTIA trade show there.

That invite prompted many to speculate that Samsung and Google would show off the next version of Android, known as Ice Cream Sandwich, as well as the follow-up to the Nexus S, which has referred to as both the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus Prime.

The search giant previewed Ice Cream Sandwich at the Google I/O conference in May. Earlier this month, Google chairman Eric Schmidt also let it slip at Salesforce.com's Dreamforce conference that Android 4.0 would be released in "October or November."

Rumors about the Nexus Prime (Galaxy Nexus?), meanwhile, have been making the rounds for some time. Recently, a random Twitter user tweeted a riddle that said the Nexus Prime would hit Verizon and Sprint on November 3. Days later, Notion Ink CEO Rohan Shravan slipped that his Android tablet Adam would be upgraded to Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, in November "after Google's launch in late October." My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
