AT&T announced today that it will start offering the Samsung Galaxy S II on October 2.

The 4G smartphone will be available in AT&T stores and online for $199.99 with a two-year contract.

Sprint's Galaxy S II was released on Sept. 16 for $199.99. T-Mobile has not yet announced a launch date or price, but a recent tweet possibly leaked processor details. Verizon has said it will not offer the Galaxy S II.

The Samsung Galaxy S II is Samsung's fastest-selling smartphone to date, based on its April debut in South Korea and parts of Europe, selling one every three seconds between April and July. The device runs a dual-core 1.2-GHz processor, includes an 800-by-480 Super AMOLED Plus touch screen, 8-megapixel rear-facing and 2-megapixel front-facing cameras.

In reviewing the unlocked version of the Galaxy S II back in May, PCMag mobile analyst Sascha Segan said the device was the "finest Android smartphone available today."

"The Samsung Galaxy S II isn't just a competitor to the current iPhone. It competes with the next iPhone," he wrote. "The Galaxy S II is the fastest Android device I've ever used, with the best screen, the best camera, and the latest version of Android software. It easily makes the cut for our lists of The Best Android Phones and The Best Unlocked Phones."

Samsung finally released the device in the U.S. in late August. For more, see PCMag's review of the Sprint Samsung Galaxy S II and the slideshow below. Also check out our hands on and benchmark tests and a walkthrough of the smartphone's features.

On Sunday, AT&T formally launched its 4G LTE network in five cities: Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio, Houston, Atlanta, and Chicago. For more, see AT&T vs. Verizon: LTE, Head-to-Head and Why is AT&T LTE Fast In Houston, Slow In Chicago?

Speaking of the next iPhone, meanwhile, there were reports this morning that Apple will unveil the iPhone 5 on October 4. So, will AT&T customers snap up the Galaxy S II on October 2 or wait to see what Apple might announce two days later?

My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
