Dell has unveiled two new Inspiron laptops, the Inspiron 13z and Inspiron 14z, the first in its new Inspiron z line-up.

If you're in the market for a new laptop, and you've looked longingly at the supermodel thin looks and elite performance of the Dell XPS 15z, but balked at the price tag, you're in luck, because Dell is bringing that same svelte profile and high performance to its mainstream line of Inspiron laptops with the Inspiron z series.

The first models to get the Zorro-esque designation are the Inspiron 13z and Inspiron 14z, with more to come before the end of 2011.

Like the Dell XPS 15z, the Inspiron 14z and 13z feature second-generation Intel Core i3 and i5 processors. The slim profile comes in under one-inch thick, and new features like Intel's WiDi 2.0 and SRS Premium Sound combine mobile performance with on-the-go entertainment. Standard features include a built-in memory card reader, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and are pre-configured with Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system. Fast connectivity is standard, as is USB 3.0 and Bluetooth 3.0, and WiMAX city-wide mobile broadband is available.

The Inspiron 14z features a 14-inch wide-screen display, with 1,366-by-768 resolution providing support for 720p video. In addition to the Intel Core i3 and i5 processors, the Inspiron 14z has several configurations available, with optional features like up to 8GB of RAM, 750GB of hard drive storage space, and an internal tray-loading DVD optical drive. The Inspiron 14z is available today through Dell.com, starting at $599.99.

The Inspiron 13z, offers several of the same features as the 14-inch variant, but with a 13.3-inch wide-screen display. In addition to standard features mentioned above, the Inspiron 13z is available with up to 8GB of memory and a choice of either 320GB or 500GB hard drive or a 128GB solid-state drive (SSD). There is no optical drive available on the Inspiron 13z. The device is not yet available in the United States; it's being released first in select Asian countries.

My Experience

From the laptops on your desk to satellites in space and AI that seems to be everywhere, I cover many topics at PCMag. I've covered PCs and technology products for over 15 years at PCMag and other publications, among them Tom's Guide, Laptop Mag, and TWICE. As a hardware reviewer, I've handled dozens of MacBooks, 2-in-1 laptops, Chromebooks, and the latest AI PCs. As the resident Starlink expert, I've done years of hands-on testing with the satellite service. I also explore the most valuable ways to use the latest AI tools and features in our Try AI column.

The Technology I Use

Between the Starlink dish on my roof and the laptop or desktop I'm using right now, I've always got a new tech product in front of me. I have five or six laptops in rotation at any moment, along with a couple of mini PCs, two smart TVs, and a couple of Chromebooks for good measure.

Everything is connected via Starlink, using the latest Dish V4 and Gen 3 Router, letting me live my tech-centric life in rural Idaho.

When I'm not testing and reviewing products, I'm probably using one of a dozen AI tools for everything from work and productivity to entertainment and saving some money.
