Boxee announced Tuesday that security issues have again delayed efforts to offer Netflix to its users.

"We're in a bit of an awkward spot at the moment," Andrew Kippen, Boxee's vice president of marketing, wrote in a blog post. "The Netflix app is up and running on Boxee (we watched the intro to 'Full Metal Jacket' earlier today), but we have not yet satisfied Netflix's security requirements."

Kippen did not elaborate on what those security requirements entail. A Netflix spokesman said that its "partners understand the requirements for a device to be certified by Netflix but we don't talk about it publicly." Kippen said he expects Netflix "availability soon."

"It's terrible to be so close to releasing and yet still be waiting on one thing to fall into place," Kippen wrote.

Boxee added Vudu's on-demand HD streaming service in late January. At the time, Boxee said it was on track to start offering Netflix by month's end, but those plans have again been delayed.

The $199 Boxee Box started shipping in early November, with services like Netflix, Vudu, and Hulu Plus noticeably absent. Vudu was expected to arrive in November and Netflix by year's end. Boxee also said at the time that it was working with Hulu to bring Hulu Plus to the Boxee Box, but has not committed to a firm date.

My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
