The ChevronWP7 Windows Phone 7 hack is officially out of business.

Brandon Watson, director of developer experience for Windows Phone 7, tweeted that the method the ChevronWP7 team used to develop the jailbreaking software has been countered. "And yes, the hole ChevronWP7 team found is closed. Get them your Qs/ideas re:homebrew so we have a constructive, inclusive, conversation," he wrote.

The ChevronWP7 team, which includes Rafael Rivera, Chris Walsh, and Long Zheng, is scheduled to travel to Microsoft next week to meet with Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 team. In December, the two sides agreed to meet, and, as a result, the ChevronWP7 team agreed to discontinue development of the unlocking tool.

ChevronWP7 was released in late November. The hole the ChevronWP7 team exploited will officially be closed in the next update to Windows Phone 7, which is due to be released in the coming months, although the date has yet to be announced.

However, the tool had already been distributed to the Internet, and was still being used, prompting a blog post by the team to highlight Watson's tweet.

As for the meeting, the developers reiterated that their intention was to encourage the Windows Phone 7 to be opened up to a broader community.

"We'll be sharing our perspective on the homebrew potentials of Windows Phone 7 and some of the wider community feedback around the platform," the ChevronWP7 devs wrote. "In addition to our homebrew focus, we will also be pushing for stronger protection of WP7 developer intellectual property (IP) on the platform as we believe both can co-exist on the platform."

Late in December, a separate development effort revealed a technique to download third-party, unapproved marketplace apps to a Windows Phone 7 phone.
