Nook by Barnes and Noble

Barnes & Noble announced Thursday that its Nook line of e-book readers is now the company's best-selling item ever.

Barnes & Noble also announced that it now sells more e-books than it does physical books on BN.com.

The book retailer has sold "millions" of Nook devices, which are available in 3G, Wi-Fi, and Color versions. The Nook Color, introduced in October, is Barnes & Noble's top-selling gift for the holiday season, the company said.

Barnes & Noble did not say exactly how many Nook devices have been sold, except to say that Nook Color sales have "continued to exceed the company's high expectations."

Barnes & Noble did reveal that 1 million Nook e-books were purchased and downloaded on Christmas Day alone. Top-selling titles included James Patterson's "Cross Fire," Stieg Larsson's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," "The Confession" by John Grisham, and "Decision Points" by former U.S. President George W. Bush.

"Nook Color became the gift of choice over the holidays for people who love to read everything – books, magazines, newspapers, children's books and more – in rich, beautiful color," William Lynch, CEO of Barnes & Noble, said in a statement. "The success of Nook Color, along with our unique ability to market Nook devices to readers in our stores and through our strong channel partnerships with Best Buy, Walmart and Books-a-Million, resulted in the continued explosive growth of our digital content business and our Nook line, our most successful products ever."

The news comes several days after Amazon announced that the latest version of its e-reader, the Wi-Fi only, third-generation Kindle, is its best-selling product ever.

My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
