Angry Birds Christmas

Rovio Mobile on Friday provided a sneak peak at the Christmas edition of its popular Angry Birds mobile game.

"Feast your eyes on a sneak peek of the next installment in the Angry Birds world," Rovio tweeted, providing a link to a Finnish Web site that had images from the upcoming game.

Rovio tweeted later that the Christmas version would be offered as a free upgrade to those who purchased Angry Birds Halloween edition. That went on sale in late October in Apple's App Store for $0.99, exclusively for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. An HD iPad version was also sold for $1.99.

An exact release date for the Christmas edition has not yet been set. "Depends on our friends in Cupertino," Rovio tweeted, referring to Apple, which has to approve the app before it can be placed in the App Store.

From the images provided to the Finnish site Ylex, Rovio has outfitted its birds and pigs with Santa hats. The various structures those birds mush smash through to get to the pigs have been fashioned to look like Christmas trees, with wrapped presents scattered about.

Earlier this week, there was a rumor that Rovio was developing a version of Angry Birds for consoles like the PlayStation3, Xbox 360, and the Nintendo Wii. A Rovio executive also said Angry Birds 2 was in the works, though he had few details to share.

My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
