Apple is reportedly discontinuing its Thunderbolt external display, often used to expand Mac screen real estate.

The move, as reported by TechCrunch, further hints at the rumored launch of a 4K or 5K version of the device. After all, it's not uncommon for companies to flush their current inventory to make room for a new product release. But Cupertino offered no explanation or plans for replacement.

A company spokesman confirmed the news to TechCrunch, adding that the 27-inch monitor will continue to sell online and via retail stores and authorized resellers "while supplies last."

"There are a number of great third-party options available for Mac users," the statement said.

Apple did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment.

The $999 accessory has not been updated since 2011, when the manufacturer added proprietary high-speed connectivity technology—a dual-channel I/O solution that delivers 10Gpbs using a single cable.

Boasting a 2,560-by-1,440-resolution IPS panel, FaceTime HD camera, and 2.1 audio system, the monitor has its flaws: the panel's height and swivel cannot be adjusted, and the glossy glass is very reflective.

Not exactly Apple's main product category, the Thunderbolt has gotten lost among a crowd of smartphones, wearables, and all-in-one Macs, which currently come in 4K and 5K Retina display options.

As Engadget speculated, this could mean the end of Cupertino's monitor business altogether, or simply a lull while the company preps for a replacement. At any rate, anyone looking to complete their collection of Apple merchandise should act fast.
