3.5 Good

The Bottom Line

Facebook's little 2014 holiday gift, Stickered for Messenger is indeed fun, letting you create stickered photos you can use anywhere, not just in Facebook Messenger.

Pros & Cons

    • No setup at all.
    • Adds cartoon overlays to your photos.
    • Can use anywhere, not just in Facebook Messenger.
    • Stickers are resizable.
    • Images can quickly get cluttered.
    • No depth adjustment for stickers.

Facebook Messenger is perennially among app store chart leaders, despite a glut of messaging app options. The big, creative, amusing stickers the app lets you send in messages may deserve some of the credit for this popularity, as they're not available in more staid messaging apps like iMessage and WhatsApp. Stickered for Messenger (free) takes stickers to a level beyond what you can do in the basic Messenger app by letting you place these smilies, cartoon animals, and impact text on top of your own photos. Let's take a closer look to see whether Facebook's silliest app to date and the latest to trickle out of Facebook's Creative Labs (joining the likes of Slingshot and Rooms) is a must-download.

Getting Stickered

The app requires iOS 8 or later, and it's a relatively tiny 2MB download, so it won't tax your data connection or take much time to install. You have to give the app access to your camera, otherwise it's not of much use.

Stickered for Messenger could be the easiest app to get going with in history. There's no setup at all, and you don't even need a Facebook account to use it. When you first run the app, you'll see the default smiley sticker with his mouth gaping open over your selfie camera view. If you want to add stickers to existing photos on your iPhone, you can do that, too.

You can move the sticker around or resize it with a pinch. A plus icon lets you add as many more stickers as you like, so images can get garish pretty quickly.

You can choose from 51 sets of stickers, including the Bun, Hamilton the hamburger, meme text, and new holiday sets. Luckily, there's a garbage can icon, which is a little different from most of its brethren: Rather than deleting the whole image, it just deletes the currently selected sticker, a miniature form of which shows up next to it.

One thing you can't do is move stickers forward or backward to change which ones appear on top of others. Nor can you do anything with the underlying photo, such as moving or scaling. But after all, it's a text sticker app, not Photoshop CC.

Following the trend of Facebook Creative Labs' other apps, the interface is stripped to a bare minimum. The only interface elements are the trash can, the plus sign, and a shutter button. Once your image is garish or witty enough for you, you tap the circular shutter button, which then changes to a Facebook Messenger icon. Tapping this opens Messenger with your perfected image and a list of your chat friends. You can select as many contacts as you like, add an optional text message, and hit Send. It's really kind of fun.

If you just want to save your embellished image, you can send it to the camera roll and use it in any photo-accepting app you like.

If you're the type who likes digital scrapbooking, you're likely to love Stickered for Messenger. Even if you're not, the app provides a fun way to pester your friends during the holidays.

My Experience

I've been testing PC and mobile software for more than 20 years, focusing on photo and video editing, operating systems, and web browsers. Prior to my current role, I covered software and apps for ExtremeTech and headed up PCMag’s enterprise software team. I’ve attended trade shows for Microsoft, Google, and Apple and written about all of them and their products.

I still get a kick out of seeing what's new in video and photo editing software, and how operating systems change over time. I was privileged to byline the cover story of the last print issue of PC Magazine, the Windows 7 review, and I’ve witnessed every Microsoft misstep and win, up to the latest Windows 11.

I’m an avid bird photographer and traveler—I’ve been to 40 countries, many with great birds! Because I’m also a classical music fan and former performer, I’ve reviewed streaming services that emphasize classical music.

Technology I Use

For everyday work, I use a good-old Dell tower with 16GB of RAM, a 12th-gen Intel Core i7 processor, and an Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti GPU that runs on Windows 11. I pair it with a 4K Lenovo ThinkVision P27u-10 monitor and a Logitech MX Vertical mouse. For offsite work, I use a 2024 Microsoft Surface Laptop with a Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite processor. Camera-wise, I moved to mirrorless from a Canon EOS 80D with a Canon 70-300mm IS USM lens. I now have a Canon EOS R7 with a 100-400mm lens, but I miss my DSLR for several reasons.

In order of usage, the software I turn to most frequently is the Edge web browser, Slack, Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft 365, Firefox, Brave, and WhatsApp. I use the Windows Phone link app to see everything on my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra phone, which has excellent telephoto capability.

For fitness monitoring, I have a Fitbit Charge 6 and use an Anker Smart Scale P1. I’m also a streaming fan, so I subscribe to both Amazon Music Unlimited (especially for its Dolby Atmos content) and Qobuz (for its high-res sound quality and classical catalog). I recently added a Vizio 5.1 Soundbar SE, which sounds surprisingly good given its low price. To holler commands instead of using a remote control, I have the Amazon Fire TV Cube in the living room, which lets me verbally tell the TV what I want to watch. It hooks up to an LG B4 OLED TV. I have a Sonos One speaker in my kitchen that also ties in with Alexa, as does the Echo Dot 2 With Clock in my bedroom. For serious listening, I have B&W 601 speakers plugged into a Conrad-Johnson Sonographe amp and preamp, with a Cambridge Audio AXN10 streamer as source. For reading, I also have a Nook GlowLight 3.
