Google is shelling out $3.2 billion to acquire Nest Labs, which makes the smart learning thermostat and smoke alarm.

Nest will operate"with its own distinct brand identity," Google said, with existing CEO Tony Fadell remaining to lead the company.

"We're thrilled to join Google," Fadell said in a statement. "With their support, Nest will be even better placed to build simple, thoughtful devices that make life easier at home, and that have a positive impact on the world."

"Nest's founders, Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers, have built a tremendous team that we are excited to welcome into the Google family," Google chief Larry Page said. "They're already delivering amazing products you can buy right now - thermostats that save energy and smoke/CO alarms that can help keep your family safe. We are excited to bring great experiences to more homes in more countries and fulfill their dreams!"

Nest Labs debuted in 2011, and counts Google Ventures as one of its investors. Fadell, Nest co-creator, is a former Apple senior vice president, and was part of the creative team behind the original iPod and iPhone. The thermostat has no direct connection to Apple products, but it's available in the Apple Store and its Wi-Fi capabilities allow control of the Nest from any iOS device — iPhone, iPad, or iPod.

Last year, Nest expanded its lineup of connected appliances with Nest Protect, a connected fire alarm and carbon monoxide detector. It is a Wi-Fi-enabled combination smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector that dispenses with the tired routine of dealing with these often annoying devices.

My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
