Google is shelling out $3.2 billion to acquire Nest Labs, which makes the smart learning thermostat and smoke alarm.

Nest will operate"with its own distinct brand identity," Google said, with existing CEO Tony Fadell remaining to lead the company.

"They're already delivering amazing products you can buy right now - thermostats that save energy and smoke/CO alarms that can help keep your family safe. Nest Labs debuted in 2011, and counts Google Ventures as one of its investors. Fadell, Nest co-creator, is a former Apple senior vice president, and was part of the creative team behind the original iPod and iPhone. The thermostat has no direct connection to Apple products, but it's available in the Apple Store and its Wi-Fi capabilities allow control of the Nest from any iOS device — iPhone, iPad, or iPod.

Last year, Nest expanded its lineup of connected appliances with Nest Protect, a connected fire alarm and carbon monoxide detector. It is a Wi-Fi-enabled combination smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector that dispenses with the tired routine of dealing with these often annoying devices.
