Pros & Cons

These outline-creation programs prove pictures really are worth a thousand words. Kidspiration, for grades K to 5, uses visual learning tools, including idea maps, webs, and hierarchies. Students illustrate their ideas using picture icons before generating an outline.

Inspiration, for grade 6 and up, adds the ability to create Web content by embedding hyperlinks in files and Web sites and exporting to HTML format. It also offers advanced formatting tools and can export students' work to Microsoft Word or AppleWorks, where they can do additional formatting and prepare robust classroom presentations. Both programs include audio support, with text narration and the ability to record verbal annotations.
