An image of Google's newest Nexus device has reportedly been posted online.

A Twitter user known as @usbfl created an account to publish an image of what the person says is the next Nexus. While the picture is somewhat blurry, it appears to show a person holding a device with a glossy finish.

"The 2016 HTC Nexus looks like a cross between the Nexus 4 and iPhone with glass and fingerprint scanner on the back," the leaker says in the tweet, which was discovered by 9to5Google.

In follow-up posts, @usbfl tipped "Two devices. One premium (last tweet), one glossy plastic (lower end). Both looked like smaller devices ([less than] 5.5 inch screens).

"It is possible that the lower end black glossy plastic device was a prototype device for testing and will not be released as a Nexus," another tweet reads.

Usbfl suggested that images of a phone posted by Android Police "isn't of the final design. The Nexus in my picture had a full glass back."

Google has released its newest mobile OS, Android 7.0 Nougat, to developers, but has not provided details on the Nexus device(s) that will run it. In June, Huawei confirmed that it is "doing the Nexus again this year," and last month there were reports of two HTC Nexus devices, codenamed Sailfish and Marlin.

Nexus devices typically run a stock version of Android that's not crowded with the unwanted bloatware that often shows up on Android devices from carriers or popular handset makers. They are a favorite among developers and Android purists, and are the only smartphones sold directly by Google.

As with anything kept secret in the technology world, it's important to take the leaked image with the proverbial grain of salt. We'll likely learn the truth in the next month or so; Google unveiled last year's Nexus lineup, the 5X and 6P, in late September.
