Sony is winning the console wars by a landslide - according to Sony. The company today announced that as of Feb. 8, its PlayStation 4 has sold more than 5.3 million units around the world.

"I am thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season," Sony CEO Andrew House said in a statement. "We are delighted that according to the NPD Group's latest data, PS4 was January's top-selling console in the United States. The PS4 system's momentum just keeps growing stronger, and we are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of PlayStation fans."

Last week, the NPD Group reported a victory for Sony over Microsoft's Xbox One in January. The analyst firm did not break out specific sales figures for each machine, but Sony executive John Koller described the sales of his company's next-generation console as "nearly doubling the nearest next-gen competitor."

Unveiled in February, the PS4 launched in North America on Nov. 15; more than 1 million gamers picked up a console in the first 24 hours. By early December, that number was at 2.1 million consoles sold worldwide.

Sony has the opportunity for even more sales, as the PS4 goes on sale in Japan this Saturday. "I'm looking forward to Japanese fans sharing the experience of the deep social capabilities and entertainment experiences only possible on PS4," House said today.

NPD's numbers mark Sony's triumphant return to the top of the gaming hardware market, which saw Microsoft sell more of its Xbox One consoles in December.
