Microsoft is hosting a small event in San Francisco today, where it is expected to provide details on its next-gen operating system.

A live-stream is not on the agenda, but PCMag's Damon Poeter is there, and will be live-blogging the big announcements from @PCMagLive (embedded below). Things kick off at 10 a.m. PT.

The new OS, which has been referred to in the press as Windows 9 or code-name Threshold, might depart from the numbered monikers this time around, if rumors are to be believed, and will possibly just be known as Windows.

More notable, however, is the suggestion that Windows 9 will be a free upgrade for existing Windows 8 users, something Apple did with OS X Mavericks last year and is expected to do again with Yosemite next month.
