Fans will finally get their hands on Final Fantasy XV after an excruciating nine-year wait. The highly anticipated title began life as Final Fantasy Versus XIII, a planned action-oriented spin-off of the mediocre Final Fantasy XIII. Little's been revealed about the game beyond the main characters and basic plot, but after playing the demo build that's bundled with Final Fantasy Type 0 HD, I can say that Final Fantasy XV holds much promise. The game will be available on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms.

Redefining Basics
Final Fantasy XV doesn't play like the other games in the main series. The real-time combat more cloesly resembles action-RPGs Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and Kingdom Hearts. Players directly control the main character, the sullen young prince named Noctis, while his allies are A.I. controlled. You cannot switch to Allied party members, in much the same way players could not switch between party members in Final Fantasy XIII.

The demo finds Noctis and his friends stranded in a region of the world called Duscae, after a driving mishap with a behemoth. They must collect a sizeable amount of money to repair their vehicle, and choose to do so by hunting monsters in the region.

Final Fantasy XV (for PlayStation 4) : Adventuring After Camping

Camping allows you and your party to heal, eat, earn passive buffs, and spend experience accrued for levels. It is an extremely important, yet pleasantly relaxing affair.

Final Fantasy XV (for PlayStation 4) : Parrying Garula

A garula is an elephantine enemy from Final Fantasy V, given new life in Final Fantasy XV. These are very powerful, and they throw their weight around to deal damage and defend themselves.

Final Fantasy XV (for PlayStation 4) : Shops and Towns

Not all NPCs can be spoken to, but there are a few shops to find and people to interact with in Episode Duscae. This is a satisfying return to classic archetypes after the linear Final Fantasy XIII.

Final Fantasy XV (for PlayStation 4) : Duscae at Dusk

Dusk is the transition that players must be wary of in the demo. It is usually safer to set up camp and wait the night out than press on and make progress.,

Final Fantasy XV (for PlayStation 4) : Invasive Enemies

Cybernetic soldiers drop down from airships to harass Noctis and the crew. If you get the jump on them, they are fairly easy to take down. But if you’re caught unawares, they can tear your health to pieces.

Final Fantasy XV (for PlayStation 4) : Classic and Modern Looks

Much like the Garula, the Goblins in Final Fantasy XV are pulled straight from Final Fantasy V. They are given a radically more detailed and modern look, but still retain much of their old-school sprite design.

Gabriel Zamora

Senior Writer, Software

In 2014, I began my career at PCMag as a freelancer. That blossomed into a full-time position in 2021, and I now review email marketing apps, mobile operating systems, web hosting services, streaming music platforms, and video games as a senior writer. I'm a graduate of Hunter College, a hard-core gamer, and an Apple enthusiast.

The Technology I Use

I play many video games in my spare time, especially on my gaming rig, which is equipped with an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 processor, Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 GPU, and 16GB of RAM. The Nintendo Switch 2 also sees a lot of action thanks to its backward compatibility, but I'll also occasionally hop on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

I'm currently using an iPhone 15 Pro Max, coupled with the Apple AirPods Max that my brother gifted me for Christmas, to listen to music or podcasts on the go. That said, I always carry my iPad Mini with me. The tablet line has served as my faithful drawing canvas for years, and is the one piece of tech I upgrade whenever I can. Paired with an inexpensive Wacom Bamboo Duo stylus, I have a compact, reliable, and convenient doodling set to keep me busy during long commutes across the Big Apple.

Cooking is my dearest passion next to gaming, and I embrace any tech that makes modern cookery a little easier. I discovered the Paprika Recipe Manager during my stint as a chef at Google HQ and fell in love with its simple yet feature-packed toolset. It makes saving and editing online recipes a cinch, and having easy access to them on my phone is a tremendous convenience.
