D-Link's travel router, the D-Link DWL-G730AP, hadn't yet debuted when PC Magazine reviewed the first three products in the category (read those reviews here). In a market where size matters, the D-Link travel router is the new champ: It's the smallest (3.3 by 2.5 by 0.7 inches), but still delivers a full feature set.

The DWL-G730AP's three-position Mode switch is marked much more clearly than it is on the competing products, making it simple to switch between router mode, access point, and Ethernet client mode. The router/firewall code is essentially the same as you'd find in D-Link's top-end routers, so you get an SPI firewall, port forwarding, domain blocking and a DMZ. One nice touch: You can power the D-Link travel router from your computer's USB port with an included cable.

The 802.11g radio in the DWL-G730AP performed well in our tests. On our test range, we observed close to 5 Mbps of throughput at 80 feet and over 2 Mbps of throughput at 100 feet, more than adequate to cover a hotel room or conference center. Wireless-security features include 64/128-bit WEP, WPA-PSK, and the ability to disable SSID broadcast.

The DWL-G730AP's small size and good performance help make it our current favorite travel router for road-going professionals.
