Delphi Automotive has been selected to test a fleet of autonomous taxis in Singapore.

Nextcar Bug artThe automaker will provide self-driving cars and compatible software for a program aimed at commuters. Trials will be conducted at Singapore's Autonomous Vehicles Test Bed (a business park in the western area of the city) for three years before it goes live in 2022.

"We are honored to partner with the Singapore LTA [Land Transport Authority] on advancing innovative mobility systems," Delphi CEO Kevin Clark said in a statement.

According to The Verge, the service will use three fixed routes for six autonomous Audi SQ5s. Riders can hail a car via Delphi's mobile app, which confirms the vehicle booking, provides an ETA, and offers suggestions for nearby pickup locations. It also advises users on departure times and offers friendly greetings.

Covering about 4 miles, the driverless vehicles are meant to help city workers transition from "first mile" to "last mile" between mass transit stations and their home or office. Over time, Delphi and the Singapore LTA hope to reduce traffic congestion and vehicle emissions.

The development program and autonomous vehicle demonstration is part of the Singapore Autonomous Vehicle Initiative (SAVI), formed in 2014 to manage AV research and software development.

"As a partner in SAVI, Delphi will use a foundation of the same vehicle technologies that enabled us to successfully complete the first coast-to-coast autonomous drive of the United States in 2015," CTO Jeff Owens said.

Delphi already operates a self-driving fleet in Silicon Valley, and completed a coast-to-coast autonomous trip across the US last year. The company is also eyeing pilot programs in North America and Europe, The Verge says.
