With a handful of autonomous cars currently in testing, Lexus has time to focus on the next novel form of transportation: the hoverboard.

The latest video in the manufacturer's Amazing in Motion series tips a working hoverboard, the futuristic mode of transportation made famous in Back to the Future II.

Less colorful and more sleek than Marty McFly's original ride, the luxury car maker's "vehicle" uses permanent magnets and liquid nitrogen-cooled superconductors (hence the fog-machine effect) to levitate.

Little else is known about the product, dubbed Slide, which has been under development for more than 18 months by teams in England and Germany, Gizmodo reported. It is currently being tested in Barcelona by a professional skateboarder.

Lexus did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment.

Since the movie debuted in 1989, people have longed for their own hoverboard (and probably self-tying shoelaces). But efforts to reproduce the technology have ramped up in recent years.

In early 2012, Mattel announced plans to release an exact replica of the film's hoverboard, including "multiple whooshing sounds." Original plans tipped a 2015 release, though the toy maker has been mum on launch details.

A husband-and-wife team last fall brought the dream a step closer via their Hendo Hoverboard Kickstarter campaign, which surpassed its $250,000 goal to raise $510,590 from 3,169 backers. Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk even took it for a spin—literally.

Neither pricing nor a release date for the Lexus device have been revealed, but the company promised regular updates on its progress. Interested consumers can follow the social media conversation using the hashtag #LexusHover.
