GoPro this week unveiled plans for a spherical camera for virtual reality and quadcopter drone.

GoPro CEO Nick Woodman showed off the new Six-Camera Spherical Array during Wednesday's Code Conference. The ball-shaped accessory mount fits six Hero4 cameras positioned in different directions to capture high-res images and video, according to Re/code, which hosts the Code events.

Using stitching software developed by Kolor, which GoPro acquired in April, the device blends together recorded content to create a 6K spherical image, Re/code said. The piece can then be viewed on VR headsets—Google Cardboard, Oculus Rift, Microsoft HoloLens—or a smartphone or PC with the Kolor app or YouTube 360.

GoPro has held off on virtual reality until now, Woodman said. But advances in the technology—particularly from Oculus VR, Google, and Microsoft—made GoPro more confident that it was worth investing in VR.

The Array, meanwhile, will be targeted at video pros and arrive in the second half of the year, with a simpler version coming at some point for consumers, Re/code said.

GoPro has also been eyeing drones. "It's incredible to see our world from new perspectives. It's a real 'Oh my God' moment," Woodman said during the Code conference.

Though he remained mum about design and pricing, the CEO tipped an early 2016 launch, aimed at consumers.

"We did that with our GoPro cameras, and we see a similar opportunity in the quadcopter market," Woodman said. "It's something that's in our DNA, and we are excited about it across the company."
