Nintendo's paint-splattered Splatoon game for Wii U has topped 1 million in sales worldwide.

That includes more than 476,000 physical and digital units sold in the Americas, 368,000-plus in Japan, more than 230,000 in Europe, and another 20,000 sold in Australia and New Zealand.

Since the game's U.S. launch on May 29, Nintendo has "seen thousands of people go online to have fun in this colorful, chaotic competition," Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said in a statement.

In Splatoon, players take on the role of Inklings, customizable characters that paint-fight to capture territory. Covering the map in your team's color is the primary objective, but the ink also comes with other properties: Use it to defeat other players, or transform your character into a squid to travel at high speeds.

Players can battle in teams of four in the online Turf War mode, enjoy one-on-one matches with friends, or play alone.

"This milestone puts us in a nice position as we prepare to launch 11 more exclusive Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games before the end of the year," Fils-Aime said, also tipping more amiibo, digital offerings, and games from third-party partners.

If you don't already own one of the million copies sold, the $60 Wii U game is available now; Best Buy is also selling an exclusive $300 bundle, with a Wii U Deluxe console, a digital Splatoon download, and Nintendo Land.

But the game hasn't exactly launched without a hitch: a truck carrying a shipment of special edition Splatoon games—featuring the Inkling Squid amiibo character—was stolen on its way from Nintendo's European warehouse to GAME UK.
