Microsoft has finally ended Sony's streak as the king of the console world.

The Xbox One maker on Thursday confirmed that its console outsold Sony's PlayStation 4 last month.

"As the best-selling console in the U.S. in April, fans set record April sales and engagement for Xbox One last month," Mike Nichols, corporate vice president for Xbox Marketing, said in a statement.

North American Xbox One console sales increased 63 percent last month compared to the same time in 2014, and the number of active global users (for both Xbox One and Xbox 360) grew 24 percent, he added.

"We are grateful to our fans for their passion and support and are looking forward to sharing more on the best game lineup in Xbox history at E3," Nichols said.

Meanwhile, industry-wide sales of new gaming hardware, software, and accessories totaled $595.7 million last month, up 3 percent from a year ago, market researcher NPD Group reported on Thursday.

Sales of new software increased 13 percent last month to $256.7 million, offsetting negative growth for hardware and accessories, which dropped 4 percent to $183.9 million and 3 percent to $155.1 million, respectively.

"On a unit basis, hardware sales grew by 12 percent," NPD Group's Liam Callahan said in a statement, adding that declines in hardware dollar sales were due to price drops. He also said the Xbox One and PS4 are performing better than their predecessors at this stage of the game.

"After 18 months on the market for Xbox One and PS4, we are seeing cumulative hardware sales over 50 percent higher than the combined sales of Xbox 360 and PS3 at the same point in their lifecycles," Callahan said.

On the software side, Warner Bros. Interactive's Mortal Kombat X was the best-selling game of the month.

"This was an exceptional launch as it marked several milestones," Callahan said.

Not only did Mortal Kombat X capture the highest first-month sales for any game in the franchise, but it also earned the second-highest first-month sales ever for the Fighting super genre. Only the March 2008 launch of Super Smash Bros: Brawl for the Wii beat it.

Grand Theft Auto V came in second place, followed by Battlefield Hardline, MLB 15: The Show, and Minecraft.

Rounding out the top 10 games of the month were: NBA 2K15 at No. 6, followed by Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin, Super Smash Bros., and Borderlands: The Handsome Collection.

My Experience

I'm PCMag's managing editor for consumer electronics, overseeing an experienced team of analysts covering smart home, home entertainment, wearables, fitness and health tech, and various other product categories. I have been with PCMag for more than 10 years, and in that time have written more than 6,000 articles and reviews for the site. I previously served as an analyst focused on smart home and wearable devices, and before that I was a reporter covering consumer tech news. I'm also a yoga instructor, and have been actively teaching group and private classes for nearly a decade.

Prior to joining PCMag, I was a reporter for SC Magazine, focusing on hackers and computer security. I earned a BS in journalism from West Virginia University, and started my career writing for newspapers in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

The Technology I Use

My little Florida beach bungalow is brimming with smart home tech. I have a smart speaker or display in every room, allowing me to control other connected devices by voice. The Nest Hub on my bedside table lets me set wake-up alarms, control my smart light bulbs, and set the temperature on my smart thermostat. I use the Amazon Echo Show 8 on my kitchen counter to browse recipes, reorder protein powder, check the weather, and watch the news while I do dishes.

Because I suffer from allergies, air purifiers are essential. My favorite model is the Dyson Purifier Cool TP07, which doubles as a fan and continuously sends indoor pollution data to its companion mobile app.

My pitbull Bradley sheds, so a good robot vacuum is a must. I currently use a premium Ecovacs Deebot that can both vacuum and mop, empty its own dustbin, and wash its own mop cloth.

For fitness, I like to mix up my routine with cycling, indoor rowing, running, and strength training in addition to yoga. I take classes on the Tonal 2 smart strength training machine, I row indoors on an Aviron machine, and track my beach runs with an Apple Watch while listening to music on my Apple AirPods Pro. On the weekends, I love riding e-bikes like the rugged, beach-friendly Aventon Aventure for fun and fitness.

My job involves a lot of virtual meetings, so a quality webcam, microphone, and ring light are important. I use the Jabra PanaCast 20 webcam, the Elgato Wave: 3 microphone, and a Yesker tripod ring light.

As for my preferred phone platform, I'm an iPhone person, but I've also extensively used Android for product testing.
