The Barbie Fashion Design Maker will undoubtedly keep any Barbie fan (or adult tech editor) entertained, but the cost of paper replacement and printer ink might add up.

Barbie Fashion Design Maker: Bundle

With the Barbie Fashion Design Maker, you get a specially designed Barbie, but only get eight sheets of printable fabric, as well as some trims and ruffles.

Barbie Fashion Design Maker: iPad App

On the iPad app, you can select various patterns and accessories for your dress.

Barbie Fashion Design Maker: PCMag Barbie

Barbie Fashion Design Maker lets you import photos that you can affix to your designs, like the PCMag logo.

Barbie Fashion Design Maker: PCMag Barbie

Unfortunately I could not print out a PCMag snuggie that Barbie would definitely need to survive the frigid temperatures in our Labs.

Barbie Fashion Design Maker: PCMag Barbie

You can remove and re-use your printed outfits - sort of. As you can see here, the PCMag Barbie dress quickly lost its stickiness after a second application.

Barbie Fashion Design Maker: Neil DeGrasse Tyson Barbie

A Cosmos-inspired background naturally called for a dress dedicated to everyone's favorite science nerd, Neil DeGrasse Tyson (sorry about the bow, NDT). On the left is what comes out of the printer.

Barbie Fashion Design Maker: Elon Musk Barbie

Barbie is ready for a rendez vous on the Red Planet with this ensemble, accented by one of the ruffles that come with the Barbie Fashion Design Maker.

Barbie Fashion Design Maker: Matrix Barbie

Help! Barbie is lost in the (hoochie-mama) Matrix.

Barbie Fashion Design Maker: Sascha Barbie

Let this be a lesson to our analysts (ahem, Sascha). Don't leave your selfies on the office iPad unless you want the next person who uses it to affix your visage onto a printed Barbie dress.

Barbie Fashion Design Maker: Girl Talk

Sascha Barbie gives Computer Science Barbie some real talk about how she does not have to ask two dudes for coding help.

Barbie Fashion Design Maker: Design Options

With the iPad app, you can also add words to your design.

Barbie Fashion Design Maker: Design Accessories

Every girl need a pink fluffy vest and pink hombre jean skirt, right? (No, actually. Don't do this to Barbie.)

Barbie Fashion Design Maker: Saving Designs

You can store your masterpieces in a gallery.

My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
