Ride-sharing company Lyft has announced a new program for drivers who don't have wheels or would rather not use their own vehicle to transport passengers.

Nextcar Bug artDubbed Express Drive, the platform lets Lyft drivers rent GM vehicles. It will kick off in Chicago before making its way to other cities, including Boston and Washington, D.C.

"Last year in Chicago alone, 60,000 people applied to drive with Lyft but didn't have a qualifying car," the companies said in a statement. "Express Drive solves this problem and offers millions of potential drivers a dynamic way to earn money while driving on the Lyft platform."

The news comes after GM invested $500 million in Lyft last year. The investment, which is part of a broader $1 billion Series F funding round for Lyft, promised to incorporate GM cars into the Lyft experience, but few details were released at the time. In addition, the companies are collaborating on new technologies, including self-driving cars.

According to the companies, the service will allow people who want to drive with Lyft to simply rent a car for a set fee. Regular Lyft drivers, however, won't need to pay the rental fee, and those who drive more will not be required to pay as much over time. "In short: The more you drive, the less you pay," Lyft says.

On its website, Lyft is advertising a Chevrolet Equinox for no extra charge, provided you give at least 65 rides per week, though if you use the car for personal use, that's $0.20 per mile. If you provide at least 40 rides, it will be $99 per week; give fewer than 40 rides per week and it's $99 plus that $0.20-per-mile fee.

Each Express Drive car includes insurance and maintenance, and can be rented for up to eight weeks at a time.

"Along with the Power Driver Bonus, tips, and same-day payouts, Express Drive is another way Lyft treats driver better, giving them access to flexible earning opportunities without the hassle of full car ownership or expensive lease deals," the company said in a statement.
