Tesla Motors is ready to ship its first electric car designed and built in Silicon Valley, the Model S.

The first 10 Signature performance versions of the Model S are ready to be picked up by their owners at the Tesla factory in Fremont, Calif., Bloomberg reported on Thursday. But if you're in the market for an electric car, this one will not come cheap. The Model S Signature is priced from $95,400 to $105,400.

The sedan, which seats five adults and two children in optional, rear-facing seats, goes from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, and is able to go 265 miles (426 kilometers) per charge, according to the company.

Tesla last month said it would start delivering the Model S on June 22, ahead of the July delivery date the company previously forecast. Tesla expects to deliver 5,000 Model S sedans to customers by the end of the year. Orders for the vehicle currently exceed 10,000.

The big question now is whether the Model S will help Tesla start earning a profit. The company expects to be "cash-flow positive" next year with about 8,000 Model S EVs sold, according to Bloomberg.

The Model S (see slideshow below) boasts a very low center of gravity courtesy of the location of its electric powertrain under the floorboard of the vehicle. Paired with "an aluminum body engineered for superior handling," that means the Model S is a serious road-hugger "while meeting the highest standards for safety," according to Tesla.

Tesla Model S Large

Tesla designers have taken advantage of the lack of an internal combustion engine and transmission tunnel in the Model S, giving the vehicle extra cargo in a second trunk under the hood.

Other amenities include a 17-inch, in-dash, touch-screen console that provides navigation assistance, as well streaming radio and Internet access. Tesla also claims the Model S sports the "most energy-dense battery pack in the industry and best-in-class aerodynamics" to give it the "longest range of any electric car in the world."

There are three different battery pack options for the Model S. The sedan can be ordered at one of Tesla's retail stores or through its online portal.

But Tesla isn't betting everything on the Model S. The company back in February unveiled a prototype of its third battery-powered vehicle, the Model X. The crossover vehicle, described as a blending of SUV and minivan, features unique, so-called "falcon wing" rear doors. Model X will likely enter production in late 2013, with full production beginning the following year, and will be priced in the $55,000 to $75,000 range.

My Experience

I'm PCMag's managing editor for consumer electronics, overseeing an experienced team of analysts covering smart home, home entertainment, wearables, fitness and health tech, and various other product categories. I have been with PCMag for more than 10 years, and in that time have written more than 6,000 articles and reviews for the site. I previously served as an analyst focused on smart home and wearable devices, and before that I was a reporter covering consumer tech news. I'm also a yoga instructor, and have been actively teaching group and private classes for nearly a decade.

Prior to joining PCMag, I was a reporter for SC Magazine, focusing on hackers and computer security. I earned a BS in journalism from West Virginia University, and started my career writing for newspapers in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

The Technology I Use

My little Florida beach bungalow is brimming with smart home tech. I have a smart speaker or display in every room, allowing me to control other connected devices by voice. The Nest Hub on my bedside table lets me set wake-up alarms, control my smart light bulbs, and set the temperature on my smart thermostat. I use the Amazon Echo Show 8 on my kitchen counter to browse recipes, reorder protein powder, check the weather, and watch the news while I do dishes.

Because I suffer from allergies, air purifiers are essential. My favorite model is the Dyson Purifier Cool TP07, which doubles as a fan and continuously sends indoor pollution data to its companion mobile app.

My pitbull Bradley sheds, so a good robot vacuum is a must. I currently use a premium Ecovacs Deebot that can both vacuum and mop, empty its own dustbin, and wash its own mop cloth.

For fitness, I like to mix up my routine with cycling, indoor rowing, running, and strength training in addition to yoga. I take classes on the Tonal 2 smart strength training machine, I row indoors on an Aviron machine, and track my beach runs with an Apple Watch while listening to music on my Apple AirPods Pro. On the weekends, I love riding e-bikes like the rugged, beach-friendly Aventon Aventure for fun and fitness.

My job involves a lot of virtual meetings, so a quality webcam, microphone, and ring light are important. I use the Jabra PanaCast 20 webcam, the Elgato Wave: 3 microphone, and a Yesker tripod ring light.

As for my preferred phone platform, I'm an iPhone person, but I've also extensively used Android for product testing.
