BullGuard Mobile Security 10 ($29.95 direct) offers a wide range of security services for smartphones. It supports Android, BlackBerry, Symbian and Windows Mobile devices. Some features are not available on Android and BlackBerry phones.

At the core of the tool is BullGuard's mobile antivirus. This tool includes an on-demand scanner to remove viruses, spyware, Trojans, and other forms of mobile malware. A real-time protection module checks all files arriving on the system whether by direct download, text message, e-mail, Bluetooth, or infrared connection.

Like iHound Mobile Phone and Family Tracker ($3.99 direct), NetQin Mobile Anti-virus for BlackBerry v4.0 (Free), and others, BullGuard Mobile includes an antitheft component. Its GPS Tracker will report the phone's geo-location on command. Other commands will lock the device to protect your private data or, if worst comes to worst, wipe all data on a stolen phone.

If you're forced to wipe a stolen phone, or if your phone is simply lost or damaged beyond repair, you need not lose your contact and calendar. The suite's basic backup component stores that data online for restoration if the device is damaged or lost. NetQin and Lookout Mobile Security ($2.99 direct) also back up contacts. Lookout's premium edition backs up photos and call history too.

The parental control component lets parents monitor a child's phone usage through a Web-based interface. While it isn't the full-scale activity monitoring provided by eBlaster Mobile for Android ($69.95 direct), it does quite a bit. It will monitor e-mail correspondents and alert parents on chosen keywords. It logs voice calls, text messages, and photos.

Parents can specify a blacklist of sites the kids shouldn't visit, but the automated content-based filtering found in Trend Micro Mobile Security for Android ($3.99 direct) isn't present. The parental control system can also send regular GPS location reports, though it doesn't go as far as iHound's "geo-fencing" feature, which alerts parents if the child at the mall during school hours or otherwise in the wrong place.

Symbian and Windows Mobile phones get two additional features not found in the Android and BlackBerry editions. A firewall component "protects your phone from hackers and network attacks", and a spam filter blocks unwanted calls and messages.
