So you ponied up the cash for a 4K Ultra HD TV set, but are still watching regular old 1080p DVDs? Not for long.

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) this week announced the new Ultra HD Blu-ray specification, which delivers super high-definition content via super high-definition discs—up-to 3,840-by-2,160 resolution.

"For years, Blu-ray Disc has set the standard for high-definition picture and audio quality in the home," BDA Promotions Committee Chairman Victor Matsuda said in a statement. "Ultra HD Blu-ray will do the same for UHD home entertainment."

<ZIFFSPLASH id="330965" article="334422"></ZIFFSPLASH>

Matsuda pointed to the "significant storage capacity and high data transfer rates" on the updated discs. For comparison, a single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold up to 25GB of data, while dual-layer discs carry up to 50GB. New Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs, meanwhile, manage up to 66GB and 100GB of data on dual- and triple-layer discs, respectively.

Ultra HD Blu-ray also promises a significantly expanded color range, high dynamic range (HDR), and high-frame-rate content, as well as next-gen immersive, object-based sound formats.

All new Ultra HD Blu-ray players must be capable of playing current Blu-ray Discs. Just look for the new UHD logo on Blu-ray products.

The news comes as more and more streaming services are rolling out or testing 4K streams, from Netflix to Amazon. The concern, however, is how much bandwidth that eats up. According to Netflix, those who opt for 4K streaming should have a "steady Internet connection speed of 25 megabits per second or higher."
