Pros & Cons

    • Intuitive operation.
    • Fast and accurate handwriting recognition.
    • Excellent integration with Apple CarPlay.
    • Overly complex interface.
    • Subscription-based connectivity.

Of all the non-touch-screen-based infotainment systems available, Audi's MMI has always been a standout for its intuitive operation and innovative features. It's gotten even better over time thanks to upgrades such as handwriting recognition and tactile toggle switches for easier access to primary functions. But with BMW breaking rank with the rest of the German luxury automakers by offering a touch screen in the new 7 Series, and both BMW and Mercedes-Benz adding handwriting recognition, Audi has had to up its game. The latest generation of MMI in the all-new Audi 2017 Q7 brings with it enough improvements and novel features to keep it at the top of the pack. It remains our Editors' Choice for non-touch-based infotainment systems.

Overview
The MMI interface in the 2017 Audi Q7 3.0T Quattro we tested consists of a rotary joystick-style controller just ahead of the vehicle's gear shift. It's flanked by a pair of toggle switches that provide access to Navigation/Map and Telephone functions on the driver's side, and Media and Radio on the passenger's side.
