Smartphone shoppers face a glut of choice, but those looking to get connected using a carrier-approved mobile hotspot have far fewer options. On AT&T, you get exactly two: the high-end Unite Pro and the slightly more affordable Velocity. The good news is that both are solid options that deliver largely comparable base performance. The Unite Pro ($199.99 sans contract) commands a $50 premium over the Velocity, and will be the right choice for more demanding users. Its key advantages are a beefier battery with reverse charging, dual-band broadcasts, and support for more simultaneous connections. It earns our Editors' Choice award for mobile hotspots on AT&T.

Design and Setup

At 4.41 by 2.68 by 0.75 inches (HWD) and 5.82 ounces, the Unite Pro is a bit boxy and will surely make itself known in ordinary pants pockets. The excess bulk is forgivable, though, as the hotspot packs an unusually capacious 4,020mAh battery inside. The Unite Pro features a relatively large and bright 2.4-inch touch-screen LCD. There are capacitive Home and Back navigation buttons to the right of the display, with a Power button centered on the top edge. On its base are two external antenna ports flanking a micro USB port. Unlike the Velocity, there's no microSD card slot, which could be a deal breaker for those used to sharing files over their hotspot.
