Remember Ello? The ad-free social network that was poised to take on Facebook nine months ago has finally launched a mobile app.

The app is available today for iOS, and will land on Android and Windows versions later this summer.

Ello made headlines in September as a more anonymous alternative to Facebook, which was embroiled in a battle with a group of drag queens who were forced to use their "real" names in profiles.

Ello secured $5.5 million in funding in the fall and pledged not to display ads or sell user data. Instead, Ello makes money by selling personalized features and other services.

The app, which requires iOS 8 or later, promises a "beautiful and elegant interface" with support for SoundCloud, Uscreen, Bandcamp on Vimeo, YouTube, and GIFs.

"Ello doesn't censor posts, comments, or messages, and you maintain full ownership of all the photos, images, and art you post," the app description said.

Despite its rivalry with Facebook (the application makes clear that "there are no manipulative algorithms that decide what you see"), users can still share posts with other social networks, including Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest, Instagram, Google+, LinkedIn, and Reddit.

The desktop version of Ello also got a boost, with upgrades like full search, real-time alerts, private messaging, private groups, and "Loves." The latter aggregates marked posts into a separate stream, allowing users to save and collect content.

Ello's sudden rise to fame made it a target for hackers, who launched an apparent distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack in late September. Users were locked out of the site for about 45 minutes.
