The status of your holiday gift list is…complicated. It exists on Post-its and paper scraps, as entries in your phone's Notes app and bookmarks in your browser. That can make holiday shopping a confusing task and inevitably lead to forgotten items.

Before that happens, put yourself first on your holiday gift list and download a gift-list app. Once you make your list, you won't have to check it twice since a good gift-list app handles most of the hard work: syncing across platforms and figuring out which stores have the items you're looking for, as well as things like the sizes of your gift recipients.

A gift-list app is probably one of the least expensive gifts you'll buy this season since most are free or under a dollar. It will certainly save you from some holiday blues, and could help your holiday budget from going into the red. One note: a few of the apps are very specifically Christmas-themed in name and look but function fine for any holiday at any time of the year.

GiftPlanner (Free)

GiftPlanner (iOS) covers all the holidays, events, and birthdays you have to buy for; lets you balance the budget for each; has a bookmarklet that adds items to your lists while you browse online; and can even send gift cards right from the app. Also, if you're awful at remembering what something is after it's wrapped, you can snap a photo and store the info.

Giftster (Free)

Giftster (iOSAndroid) is most useful if you're organizing lists for groups of people, like families, friends, or offices. You can write your own lists for those you're buying for or you can get them to join Giftster so you can see what they want and buy it with one click. There's also a Secret Santa feature that makes gift exchanges easy.

Gifted ($2.99)

What about a present for you this holiday? Gift yourself Gifted (iOS). It has plenty of organizing and budgeting features, including letting you make profiles of those you're buying for so you always have their sizes and preferences on hand, setting budgets per person and per event, keeping gift histories so you don't rebuy the same gift for someone, and telling you how close you are to accomplishing all your buying.

The Christmas List ($2.99)

Divvy up the dough you have to spend by who you're spending it on with The Christmas List (iOS). You can also arrange your list by store so you don't make multiple trips in person or fill online shopping carts (and pay shipping fees) more than once. If you're sharing gift-giving duty, there are simple ways to send your lists. The countdown feature lets you know how many shopping days you have left this season.

Christmas Gift List (Free)

Same name, different app. The satisfying ticking off of items is probably going to be your favorite feature of Christmas Gift List (Android). Or you might prefer that you can get a countdown to Christmas, keep track of your budget, and even start planning for next year.

Santa's Bag (Free)

It would be nice if Santa showed up, but you know there's not going to be a Christmas miracle. You're buying the gifts this year and Santa's Bag (iOS) can help you keep track of what each person wants, how many gifts you've purchased, how much to spend, and even if you've wrapped the gift or not.

Gift List Diary (Free)

Don't write in your diary wondering how you'll get everything done for the holidays, use it to get your gift list under control. Gift List Diary (Android) lets you set a budget for everyone on your list, mark when a gift is bought and when it's wrapped, and lets you share your lists with others.

Christmas Gift List (Free)

Buying and budgeting is made easy with Christmas Gift List (Android) this year—and next—since it archives your list to remind you of the favorite items of your favorite people. The app is also password-protected to keep what's wrapped up under wraps. And it handles multiple currencies and languages.

Christmas Gift List Tracker

There's a countdown to Christmas at the top of Christmas Gift List Tracker (iOS), not that you necessarily need one if you're on top of your gift giving to the point of using an app. What you can probably use, though, is the bar chart with your budget that's right underneath. It tallies up all your purchases from your various gift lists and lets you know how much you have left. The app also lets you view lists from previous years to avoid gifting mistakes, collaborate on lists, and set a password so no one can snoop.

My Experience

My title is Senior Features Writer, which is a license to write about absolutely anything if I can connect it to technology (I can). I’ve been at PCMag since 2011 and have covered the surveillance state, vaccination cards, ghost guns, voting, ISIS, art, fashion, film, design, gender bias, and more. You might have seen me on TV talking about these topics or heard me on your commute home on the radio or a podcast. Or maybe you’ve just seen my Bernie meme

I strive to explain topics that you might come across in the news but not fully understand, such as NFTs and meme stocks. I’ve had the pleasure of talking tech with Jeff Goldblum, Ang Lee, and other celebrities who have brought a different perspective to it. I put great care into writing gift guides and am always touched by the notes I get from people who’ve used them to choose presents that have been well-received. Though I love that I get to write about the tech industry every day, it’s touched by gender, racial, and socioeconomic inequality and I try to bring these topics to light.

Outside of PCMag, I write fiction, poetry, humor, and essays on culture.

My Areas of Expertise

  • Making incomprehensible tech news easy to understand
  • Expanding the boundaries of topics covered in the industry
  • Figuring out tips and tricks in apps and on devices and letting you know about them
  • Putting together gift guides for everyone in your life

The Technology I Use

All that gadgets is gold for me: my iPhone 11 Pro, my fifth-generation iPad that I use only for streaming videos and music, my iPad mini 4 that I like to take with me whenever I carry a bag that can fit it, and my MacBook Pro. Why are they all different shades of gold, though? What’s going on, Apple?

None of them quite live up to my two past loves: my LG Lotus LX600 phone and my Sony Walkman NW-E005 MP3 player.

I've never given up wired earbuds so I was ahead of all those trend pieces. I use a Mangotek Lightning-to-3.5mm headphone jack adapter to connect them to my phone.

I have had so many ebook readers, but I prefer paper to them all. Still, my Kindle Paperwhite is perfect for traveling or when I’m too impatient to wait for a book to be released in paperback.
